Frequently Asked Questions about the Rhode Island Red Sox Charitable License Plate

PLATE NUMBERS

Can I keep my current RI license plate number if I have 5 or fewer digits?

Yes, if you have 5 or fewer digits on your current RI License plate, you will have the same RI plate number. When you switch to a Red Sox license plate, your current number is transferred to the new plate. Just think of it as ordering a new background design for your existing plate. Please fill out the Red Sox RI license plate order form and return it with the $41.50 payment and a copy of your current registration to the address on the order form.

What if I currently have a six-digit RI license plate?

Unfortunately, the DMV can only fit five or fewer digits on the Red Sox license plate. If you currently have a six-digit RI license plate, you will need to go to any DMV branch and transfer your current license plate to a five-digit license plate (there is an additional fee of $21.50). Then AFTER you have your RI five-digit license plate, please fill out the Red Sox RI license plate order form and return the form with the $41.50 check made out to the Red Sox Foundation and a copy of your current registration to the address on the order form and we will place the order with RI Division of Motor Vehicles for your new Red Sox logo plate with the same 5 or fewer digit number accordingly.

Are there any special letter/number combinations available?

The Red Sox Foundation has a limited number of special letter/number combinations beginning with the letters “RS” that will be put up for auction at a later date. Please visit www.redsoxfoundation.org for updated online auction information which will be posted in Sept. 2011 and updated when new info is available.

Can I pick the letter/number combination on my Red Sox RI license plate?

If you are interested in changing your license plate number before applying for a Red Sox RI license plate, the DMV has guidelines on what letter and number combinations are available. These rules are set by the RI DMV, so please visit www.dmv.ri.gov for more information.

What if I am buying a new car or registering a used car for the first time, so I have no Rhode Island license to transfer?

Before applying for a Red Sox RI license plate, you first must register your car with the RI Division of Motor Vehicles and obtain a standard license plate with 5 or fewer digits. After you have a 5 digit RI plate, you can apply for the Red Sox plate following the steps for transfer by filling out the RI Red Sox License Plate Order Form, submitting payment of $41.50 to the Red Sox Foundation along with a COPY of your current car/truck registration. More details are available below and on the Order Form.

PAYMENT

How much does a Red Sox RI license plate cost?

The cost of a Red Sox RI license plate is $41.50 IN ADDITION to the normal vehicle registration fee, which is set by the state of RI. Of that $41.50 first-time fee, $21.50 will go to the DMV to cover plate production costs and state fee, and $20 will go to the Red Sox Foundation to benefit RI charitable programs.

When do I renew my vehicle registration and my Red Sox RI license plate?

Buying the Red Sox RI license plate does not change the renewal deadline for you to renew your vehicle registration. When you renew your vehicle registration as required by state law, you will be asked to renew your Red Sox RI license plate at the same time.

How much will it cost to renew my Red Sox RI license plate?

Once you have a Red Sox RI plate, you will continue to keep that same plate in the future. In addition to the normal vehicle registration fee, once you have a RI Red Sox plate, the cost for renewing your Red Sox RI license plate is an additional $10 surcharge, all of which will go directly to the Red Sox Foundation.

USE OF CHARITABLE PROCEEDS

Will the money that goes to the Red Sox Foundation from the Red Sox RI license plate support all of New England?

No, all of the net funds raised through the Red Sox RI license plate program will be devoted exclusively to charitable activity in Rhode Island. All net proceeds will be donated by the Red Sox Foundation to select Rhode Island charitable programs on an annual rotating basis as determined by the Foundation.

What is the Red Sox Foundation?

Founded in 2002 as the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox, the Red Sox Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit primarily focused on 5 cornerstone programs with a mission of serving the health, education, recreation, and social service needs of at-risk children and families across New England.

GETTING YOUR RI RED SOX PLATES

How long will it take to get my Red Sox RI license plate?

Under the new legislation, the Red Sox Foundation first needs to collect 900 paid plate applications BEFORE the DMV can produce the new Red Sox RI license plates. We hope to collect the first 900, as required, before the end of 2011 – hopefully, a lot sooner. AFTER we have submitted the first 900 applications, it will take approximately 6-8 weeks for the DMV to produce your new license plate. (Please note this time estimate does NOT include the initial delay required to collect the first 900 license plate orders)

How do I get my new Red Sox RI license plate?

Once you have submitted your order form and payment, and AFTER the DMV has confirmed they have processed your order, we will send you an email with information on when you can pick up your plate. Please note that you will need to turn in your old license plates and pick up your new license plate at the DMV’s Cranston office. Under DMV rules, plates cannot be mailed or picked up at any other locations.

PLEASE NOTE: THE REGULATIONS CONTROLLING THE ISSUANCE OF RHODE ISLAND LICENSE PLATES AND VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS IN RHODE ISLAND ARE CONTROLLED BY THE STATE’s DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES, NOT THE RED SOX FOUNDATION. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION PROCESS FOR RI RED SOX LICENSE PLATE IS AVAILABLE FROM THE RHODE ISLAND DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES AT www.dmv.ri.gov or (401) 462-4368.
